Writing:

  • Learning various types of writing, including argumentative, persuasive, and personal essays
  • Writing a good summary
  • Developing arguments, and anticipating and refuting counter-arguments
  • Constructive peer review
  • Crafting a concise thesis statement
  • Using word choice to alter tone and style

Linguistics:

  • Introductory linguistics topics, including subfields of linguistics, descriptivism vs. prescriptivism, and linguistic relativity
  • Minority language representation (for example, "eye dialect")
  • Translation strategies

Responsibilities:

  • Designing and planning course and all materials
  • Grading essays
  • One-on-one meetings with students twice per semester
  • Creating engaging in-class assignments
